The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The EYFS is how the government and early years professionals describe the time in your child's life between birth and age 5. It is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as prepare them for their future learning. Their learning experiences should be happy, active, fun, exciting and secure and support their development, care and learning needs.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understand through 7 areas of learning and development. Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first, these are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are the most essential for your child's learning and development. As children grow the prime areas will help them to develop skills in the 4 specific areas. The specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

How we achieve this at Tasha's Tots: All learning is achieved through a variety of child led free play and every day activities. I also plan a monthly theme that the children might like to learn about e.g. the seaside, mini-beasts, festivals etc. these are incorporated once or twice a week into our plans.

I also regularly observe the children and record their development in their Learning Journey file which helps me plan their next steps. Parents are encouraged to look at this file with their children.
